Colloquial Vietnamese
Beginner Vietnamese textbook with structured lessons, grammar, exercises, and free native-speaker audio for the dialogues and reading passages.
Continuing Vietnamese is a second-year textbook for learners who already know the basics and want a more serious, structured next step. It is aimed at high school, college, or self-study use, and it follows Bình Như Ngô's earlier beginner book. If you want a book that pushes you beyond survival phrases into longer conversations and reading, this is the kind of resource it is.
The current Tuttle edition is a 356-page hardcover with online audio, listed by the publisher at Tuttle Publishing. The book has 10 lessons, and each one is split into two parts: a dialogue in Hanoi Vietnamese and a narrative section with more formal written Vietnamese. Lessons cover everyday and cultural topics such as travel, education, housing, tourism, literature, music, and sports, so you get both language practice and background on Vietnam.
What it does well is structure. You get dialogues, readings, grammar and usage notes, exercises, cultural notes, and a lot of native-speaker audio, which makes it useful for learners who like systematic study. The main downside is that it is not especially light or easygoing. Independent reviewers and learner comments note that the explanations are detailed, the readings can feel dense, and the exercises do not include an answer key, which makes solo study less convenient. If you like textbook-style learning and do not mind working carefully, it looks solid. If you want fast, casual practice, it may feel heavy.
